Connecting
One of the most rewarding aspects of reading is making connections to the material. Strong readers make deep and meaningful connections that relate to the true essence of what they are reading. Not all connections are created equal, however. Some connections can be categorized as superficial. For this challenge, we are going to have a little bit of fun. A series of excerpts will be presented, and your job is to generate one frivolous connection as well as a deep and meaningful one. Have some fun with it, but be sure to demonstrate your ability to connect with the article.

Excerpt 1:
"I don't really want to comment until we get all the facts straight," said Hartney. "We want to talk to the parents who were actually at the tournament to figure out what actually happened.
Excerpt 2:
"It doesn't look good on Prince George and it doesn't look good on Prince George minor hockey. All this came to light Monday afternoon and Tuesday. We're volunteers and we have to work during the day and deal with this stuff when we have free time in the evening. Hopefully by the next two or three days it's done."
Excerpt 3:
"The Cougars skated off to their change room, smashing their sticks in disgust along the way without honouring their opponents [with] the traditional handshake," he said. "I could not believe what I was seeing. Nanaimo could not believe what they were seeing, the Prince George players parents could not believe what they were seeing. This was not the way the game is supposed to end.
Excerpt 4:
"I shook his [Matt's] dad's hands, we had tears streaming down our faces and we're both grown men. It was a touching moment. I'd never seen anything like this and had never seen a kid stand up like he did. Matt stood by what's right."
Helpful hints to powerful connections:
Excerpt 1: This part of the article is dealing with gathering all the facts before making a decision, so I am looking for students to connect to a time in their life where they made a decision prior to knowing all the facts, or a situation in which they held off on a decision until they knew all the facts. We have learned the word impulsive, so I'm hopeful students will be able to use this idea in their connection.
Excerpt 2: This part of the article focuses on how a volunteer position can become onerous and I'm hoping students connect to a time when they felt overwhelmed by an activity that was supposed to fun and rewarding. It can be anything, but I am pushing students towards the idea of "This isn't what I signed up for!!".
Excerpt 3: This selection of the article is focusing on the poor sportsmanship shown by the Prince George team. The hope is that students can recall a time in their life where they saw a team or player react in a non-sportmanslike manner. It could be in person or on TV.
Excerpt 4: This selection deals with the outpouring of emotion caused by the boy's brave stance to remain on the ice alone. We talked about times in our lives where we saw something so courageous that it made us emotional. We spoke of the Olympics or movies that stir the emotions.
